It is Wilkinson’s goal that recognizing these common emotions allows the viewer to feel connected to the subject and other humans, while better understanding themselves.

Cobi Deppen - Unworthy Sinner Forgiven
(graphite on paper)
40" x 30"
Statement:
Cobi Deppen is a 21-year-old, self taught artist. She specializes in graphite, but dabbles in ceramics, colored pencil, and painting— and is eager to explore all types of new mediums. She is intrigued by the human face, knowing that God is the true artist, creating every feature with intentionality. She believes that tales can be told through emotion shown by details as simple as a squint of an eye. Realism is the style that Cobi excels at; she strives to make every artwork more realistic than the last. God gave her this gift, and she intends to use it for His glory. My name is Cobi Deppen. This piece, “Unworthy Sinner: Forgiven,” is my only self portrait to date. The accentuated imperfect marks and scars on my face and body serve as outward symbols of my inward sinful nature, portraying the fact that I am an unrighteous sinner, unworthy of forgiveness, and in need of a savior. The dramatically dark background illustrates the fact that there is no saving hope that this world has to offer, salvation is found solely in Jesus Christ and his sacrifice. My posture in this self portrait is one of immense gratitude and worship. I am fully aware that I do not deserve grace and mercy—I instead should be experiencing the wrath of God— but because of the Lord’s unimaginable kindness and goodness, He has made a way for us to be saved from our sin by the blood of His son, Jesus Christ. This portrait is my attempt to capture the essence of who I am: an unworthy sinner, forgiven by the grace of God.
